Pioneers battle 19th-ranked Newberry before dropping 4-2 decision

NEWBERRY, S.C. --- Newberry College took a 4-2 victory over Tusculum University in South Atlantic Conference women's tennis Saturday afternoon at the Oakland Tennis Center.

The 19th-ranked Wolves (9-1, 3-0 SAC) dropped the doubles point to the Pioneers (6-4, 0-2 SAC), but won four of the five singles matches to capture the victory.

Tusculum won the doubles point as Ylva Frafjord Landa and Emma Kotzmannova beat Yui Suzuki and Renee Dorval 7-5 at flight one, and Ginevra Moreno Villa teamed with Jimena Rivera Camacho for a 7-6 win at flight three over Margarita Roshka and Aina Miralles.

Newberry went up 2-1 as Hazel Vernon defeated Sophia Amyes 6-0, 6-1 at flight six and Dorval downed Rivera 6-2, 6-0 at flight five. Suzuki held on for a 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) win over Kotzmannova at flight two, but Landa defeated Roshka 6-4, 6-4 at flight one to pull the Pioneers within 3-2. Lina Sarhan clinched the match for the Wolves as she beat Moreno 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 at flight three.

With Sunday's scheduled match against Lees-McRae postponed due to weather, the Pioneers will be back on the court on Wednesday, March 11 at Lincoln Memorial beginning at 1:30 p.m. The Railsplitters are 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the SAC after beating Coker 4-1 at home on Saturday.
