Carson-Newman takes 4-0 win over Pioneers

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Carson-Newman University defeated Tusculum University 4-0 in South Atlantic Conference women's tennis Thursday afternoon at the Nichols Tennis Complex.

The Eagles (7-9, 4-4 SAC) and Pioneers (8-10, 1-7 SAC) waited out a two-hour delay due to rain at the start of the match, then the Eagles won the doubles point and three singles matches in straight sets to take the win.

In doubles, Carson-Newman's Leah McBride and Mar Fraile beat Carla Guasch and Sophia Amyes 6-3 at flight three, but Ylva Frafjord Landa and Emma Kotzmannova responded with a 6-3 win over Hala Awad and Kerrigan Spiers at flight one. The Eagles would take the point at flight two, where Maria del Mar Sarda and Kira Baacke defeated Ginevra Moreno Villa and Jimena Rivera Camacho 6-3.

In singles, Fraile beat Amyes 6-0, 6-2 at flight six and McBride won 6-2, 6-2 at flight five over Rivera. At flight three, Sarda downed Moreno 6-3, 6-1 to clinch the match. In the unfinished matches, Kotzmannova was up a set on Spiers when the Eagles clinched the victory.

The Pioneers will play at 11th-ranked Wingate on Saturday, April 4 beginning at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs dropped their first conference match of the season on Thursday with a 4-0 loss to ninth-ranked Catawba, leaving Wingate at 12-4 overall and 7-1 in the SAC.
