GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum women's volleyball team fell to Newberry on Friday (Oct. 24) in a five sets. Half of TU's 12 home matches have now gone the distance.
The Pioneers (7-11, 5-7 SAC) have now lost four in a row after the upset by the Wolves (9-8, 4-6 SAC) by scores of 25-14, 21-25, 24-26, 26-24, 13-15.
Carole Ann Hussey led Newbery with 18 kills and was one of four Wolves to record double-digit kills. The setting duo of Annie Dill (30) and Giovanna Ravanhani (25) combined for 55 assists. The latter also landed a pair of service aces. Anna Schneider and libero Hailey Clayworth finished with 19 and 18 digs, respectively. Gabby Warren was credited with seven total blocks.
Grace VanZwieten led four Pioneers in double figures with 17 kills, followed by Mackenzie Land (15), Karris Oller (11), and Isabella Bianchin (10). Bianchin reached double-digits for the first time in her career. Jaida Alvin (6) and Victoria Church (3) rounded out the scoring. Church dished out 42 assists, while Land tallied a career-best five aces. Four Pioneers also recorded 10 or more digs: Church (15), Mary Katherine Hall (14), Land (11), and Maggie Kane (10). At the net, Bianchin was credited with five total blocks (one solo, four assists).
Newberry hit .204 as a team with 66 kills and 29 errors on 181 total attempts. Tusculum hit .206 with 62 kills, 25 errors, and 180 total attacks. The Wolves led the match in assists (63-54), digs (83-81), and total blocks (9-8), while the Pioneers tallied more service aces (7-5).
Tusculum begins a three-match week on Tuesday (Oct. 28) at Lenoir-Rhyne, with first serve scheduled for 6 p.m.
