AFTON, Tenn. --- Tusculum College compiled an
astounding .412 attack percentage en route to a 3-0 (25-12, 25-13,
25-7) sweep of Coker College in South Atlantic Conference
volleyball action on Friday night in Afton, Tennessee. Senior Megan
Hasse posted a match-high 11 kills while hitting .556.
The match was played at Chuckey-Doak High School because the
college is hosting the Remote Area Medical clinic this weekend on
the Greenville campus. Following the match, TC (16-13, 15-6 SAC)
honored seniors Hasse and Taylor Boone, who recorded a pair of
kills and a dig.
Freshman setter Shannon Murphy tallied 17 assists and 11 digs
for her team-leading ninth double-double of the season. Sophomore
outside hitter Rachel Garnett added seven kills while hitting a
sizzling .636, while freshman outside hitter Sabrina Schleuger
finished with nine kills and seven digs. Sophomore Moriah Joes had
a match-high 12 digs.
TC jumped out to an early 10-3 lead in the first set off the
heels of a 4-0 run. Coker (5-24, 1-20) put together a quick 2-1 run
to cut the deficit to 11-6, however that's as close to the lead as
they would come in the set. Tusculum scored seven of the last ten
points to take a 1-0 lead in the match with the 11-point first set
victory.
In the second set, TC got off to another hot start by taking
the first six points in the frame off the service of Schleuger.
Later in the set, the Pioneers reeled off another 6-0 run to take a
commanding 19-7 lead. They would easily take the second set by 12
points and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Tusculum offense continued to fire on all cylinders in the
third set and, with the help of a 7-0 run off the service of Hasse,
jumped out to an astonishing 17-4 lead. TC closed out the match on
an 8-3 run to earn its sixth-straight victory. The 18-point victory
was the largest margin of victory in a set this season.
Coker was led by Celia Duggan who had five kills. Samantha
Celek had a team-high seven digs while Christen Bragg dished out 14
assists.
The Pioneers will close out the regular season tomorrow
afternoon against #12 Wingate at 2 p.m., at Chuckey-Doak High
School.
